Magnetic Card Reader Lock
A Dallas, Texas area law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that credit card skimmer devices were recovered from multiple retail gasoline pumps at a local convenience store on September 13, 2010. Credit card skimmers are electronic devices that credit card fraud thieves install inside pump housings out of view and connect internally to the wiring from the card readers used to swipe credit and debit cards to make gasoline purchases. When a card skimmer is in place, the information from debit and credit cards is captured and stored for later use.
Point of sale terminals installed on many gasoline pumps today are convenient for debit and credit card users, eliminating the need to go inside and having to stand in line to pay. Yet the increasing popularity of card skimming is making the convenience expensive for both consumers and financial institutions. Those who have discovered fraudulent charges on a credit card or had money removed from bank accounts and had no clue how their card information had been compromised, may well have been victims of a card skimmer.
Scope of the Credit Card Skimmer Scam
Visa U.S.A. Inc. was among the first in the credit card issuer industry to notice the precipitous rise in credit card skimmer fraud. In November 2006, the company issued “Visa U.S.A. Inc. Data Security Alert,” that warned gasoline retailers to be on the lookout for the presence of card skimmers inside pump housings. The alert noted that many automated dispensers are secured with locks for which readily available common keys exist, making it easy for thieves to access them to install the devices and leaving behind no evidence that tampering has occurred.
