This United States is a pluristic nation with numerous languages and cultures. With the ever growing diversity of the United States the call to be able to communicate in more than one language is growing with every day that passes by. The days of long hours of rote memory and cumbersome flash cards are gone. There are many tools that enable most anyone to learn a new language.
The Old Method to Learn a New Language
The prospective language student has a desire to learn French, or maybe learn the German language, or even learn to speak Spanish. Next the student looks around for a college campus someplace and check on language courses available. The student then goes through the signup process and pays the fees. A standard language class today will run $500 per semester. Just to achieve the ability to communicate in a different language will take at least two semesters. Add in the cost of books and flash cards and the total is another $50-100.
The New Method to Learn a New Language
Due to the numerous tools available today the first step is to determine what the student's goals are. For instance is the student's goal conversational language? Is the student's goal to be able to do research in another language? Does the student desire to not only speak and read but also write in another language? For instance many of the doctorates in philosophy require reading (doing research) in French and German. The student may want to converse with a Spanish neighbor. The student may want to communicate through a Facebook entity located in another country.
