Ive been asked on a number of occasions what the different services do that are running on a computer system. Now, if you have ever looked at the running services you can see that there are alot of them. If you havent, take a look now.

Whats Running?

In Windows 2000 and XP go to Start Programs Administrative Tools Services. As you can see there are alot of services that can run on your system. Most of them are background items. The question I'm usually asked is what all of these do and can I turn off any of them. If so which ones can I do without.

In this not-so-exhaustive list I give a little of the details of each service as well as well as what happens if you turn them off or leave them on. And whether it is suggested to turn leave them on or turn them off.
