123 Eid Card
Following a painfully weak card thrust upon the unmoved Germans, the UFC returned just a week later, on Saturday, November 20th to America's shores and to Detroit, Michigan for the first time since UFC 9.
UFC 9 became notorious as, during the organisation's "no rules" era, it was brought to the attention of former presidential candidate, senator John McCain, whose comment that the UFC constituted "human cockfighting" has lingered like a bad smell in the background of MMA ever since despite profound reformation and a strictly enforced skillset.
That night, 14 years ago, the competition was often incompetent, and more frequently dull to the point of farce. But, in spite of the lack of title fights on the card, UFC 123 couldn't have been more different as it possessed all that has the potential to make MMA great; technique, power, invention, drama and controversy against the backdrop of genuine- if cynically marketed- drama of the characters involved and their personal and professional arcs in a way that was redolent of boxing's 1960s heyday:
